Dan Hopkins
Senior Consultant, Public Policy
Dan Hopkins served as Director of Communications and Deputy Chief of Staff for Colorado Governor Bill Owens as a member of the senior staff since December 2001. He was involved in the strategic messaging and planning for the Governor for six years, and was at the Governor’s side during key events in his term, including the Platte Canyon High School shooting in 2006, the forest fires of 2002, and the 2004 presidential election campaign. He was directly responsible for day-to-day media relations and the handling of the Governor’s public events, interviews and scheduling.
Prior to joining the Governor’s office, Hopkins was Director of Public Information for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). In addition, the Colorado Transportation Commission appointed Hopkins to the position of Commission Secretary. He joined the agency in 1985 when it was known as the Department of Highways.
From 1971 to 1985, Hopkins was Director of Public Relations for the Rocky Mountain AAA Auto Club. While at the Auto Club, he established the metro area’s first traffic reporting network delivering rush hour traffic reports to various Denver radio stations. He began his career as a reporter for several Denver radio stations, including KOA and KFML.
A Denver native, Hopkins graduated from the University of Denver in 1968 with a degree in Mass Communications. A resident of Aurora since 1971, he is married with three adult children and two adorable grandchildren.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, which directs taxpayer funds to support more than 200 Denver museums, cultural facilities and theatre, music and art programs.
